ScifiGeeks started out with a passion for posting content ONLY from scifi, without fantasy or supernatural content getting mixed in, as many other popular sites include. The community grew and became an active community for fellow scifi fans. We even rallied a few years back to mock Syfy for dropping true scifi and adding more reality shows and wrestling. Sadly the time has come for this journey to end – at least with an indefinite hiatus.
I started working on Science Fiction Geeks when it was a small blogger.com site and over the past few years I worked hard by posting engaging scifi content and grew it to a large social media force of over 14,000 Twitter followers and 2,000 Facebook fans. Unfortunately the Twitter handle was renamed for the different purpose and the @Scifigeeks account had to be restarted from scratch.
With Facebook being the larger of the accounts, I re-launched with a focus on Facebook and no blog. Things were going swell until Facebook started hiding posts from pages in users’ news feeds. Now for every Facebook post I make, less than 5% of the fans following will see my posts. A year ago, it was 10-15%, which I felt was an acceptable amount of viewership, but now the work I put into updating content is seen by less than 100 people, who don’t like or comment. I suspect most of the views are coming from fake accounts following the page. Additionally, Twitter interaction rates have dropped, with few RTs and no chat going on.
For the past 3 years I have been the only person maintaining the ScifiGeeks and FantasyFicGeeks accounts. While I still love scifi, I am saddened to report that I do not have time to rebuild a community that has died due to forces outside my control.
Thank you to everyone who has been a fan of the community dedicated to true scifi posts, and for all the fun chats we had in the past regarding the latest scifi happenings.
If any parties out there are interested in working together to bring scifi and other specialized genres’ news to the world – leave a comment or ping me on Twitter. Take care everyone!
